The Eighth Conference on the Econometric Models of Climate Change (EMCC VIII)

The Eighth Conference on the Econometric Models of Climate Change (EMCC VIII) will take place at King’s College, University of Cambridge on 16-17 August, 2024, and is organised by the Cambridge climaTRACES Lab in collaboration with the Janeway Institute, the King’s Entrepreneurship Lab, and the Cambridge Endowment for Research in Finance (CERF) at the Cambridge Judge Business School.

The Conference on Econometric Models of Climate Change, established in 2016, continues its annual tradition of promoting interdisciplinary collaboration in the study of climate change. This year, we seek paper submissions that employ new econometric and statistical methods within climate change models, analysing climate data, climate impacts, biodiversity loss, climate migration, and related subjects. You can find previous editions of the conference here.

Programme: The programme for EMCC VIII is available from here, with 28 papers being presented and 23 poster sessions. We will have more than 100 participants over the three days at the Lab, from 46 institutions (academic, private sector, public and intergovernmental organisations) and people travelling from 15 countries.

Exhibition: As a special treat our colleagues from the Archive Centre at King's College has arranged an amazing exhibition on “Keynes and the King’s Economists”. At King’s we are fortunate enough to hold not only John Maynard Keynes’ papers, but also those of his contemporaries and economists who followed in his footsteps, including the legendary Joan Robinson, Nicholas Kaldor, Richard Stone, Frank Hahn, Arthur Cecil Pigou and many more. The exhibition will showcase a selection of documents from our various collections.

Programme Committee: Marina Friedrich (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Eric Hillebrand (Aarhus University), Kamiar Mohaddes (University of Cambridge), Felix Pretis (University of Victoria & University of Oxford), and Tommaso Proietti (Università di Roma ‘Tor Vergata).

Organising Committee Team from climaTRACES Lab: Sophie Harbour, Kamiar Mohaddes, Matthew Agarwala (University of Sussex), Matt Burke (University of Sheffield), Pati Klusak (Edinburgh Business School), Darragh McLaughlin (University of Cambridge), and Henning Zschietzschmann (University of Cambridge).

Call for Papers: Submissions should focus on the application of econometric and statistical techniques to climate data analysis and the estimation of climate change's socio-economic and financial effects, alongside considerations for policy evaluation. Papers that present challenges in climate science, where statistical methods provide analytical insights, are especially welcome.

Submission (now closed): Please submit the title and extended abstract (or completed paper), before May 15, 2024 using the form here.

Pre-Conference Policy Workshop: Do join us for a workshop on Landing the Economic Case for Climate Action with Decision-makers (15 August, 2024 at King’s College, Cambridge), which includes a discussion on why global climate action is still insufficient despite a clear economic case for climate action, as well as a roundtable discussion on the most effective policy levers to incorporate tomorrow’s costs into today’s decisions.
