Marian Suchanek (Masaryk University) will be presenting his work on “Exiting the Carbon Market: Analyzing Withdrawals from the EU ETS”.
About this session: Marian investigates the factors influencing installation withdrawals from the EU Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) between 2013 and 2024, encompassing Phase III and the beginning of Phase IV. Utilizing a comprehensive dataset that integrates information from the EU ETS transaction log and the European Energy Exchange (EEX), the analysis explores economic, regulatory, and market-based drivers behind the decision of installations to exit the scheme. By combining quantitative modeling with sectoral and country-level controls, Marian aims to provide insights into the dynamics and the effectiveness of ETS design in retaining participation over time.
About our speaker: Marian is a Ph.D. candidate at Masaryk University, Czech Republic.

The weekly climaTRACES workshops, organised by Kamiar Mohaddes and Henning Zschietzschmann, are attended by a diverse group of people from economics, geography, politics, engineering, business, earth sciences, natural sciences, and history, generating interdisciplinary discussion. One person leads the session, on either a paper they have written, a work in progress, or just an idea they have and would like feedback on. This is also an opportunity for people to find our more about the team on what climaTRACES have been up to and what future events and research projects are being developed.
